Black Health and Wealth Repair

Black communities across the country are designing sophisticated new campaigns  to improve health outcomes. Efforts that focus on repairing the damage done by generations of oppression can create healthy living conditions, repair wealth gaps, and ensure culturally competent health care.  These repairs give us the opportunity to finally end the longest, persistent life expectancy difference in the country.

In conjunction with over 80 partners, we are designing communities for Black Health through three interlocking campaigns.

  • A full-service community development fund that will provide capital to the community planning, innovation, and built environment needed in Black communities as we move across the country. The first year of organizing for this fund convened over 50 Black led organizations and allies, who successfully became the top five Bay Area caucus legislative priority and Black Legislative Caucus priority in California. The statewide campaign continues across California this year, now with 80 organizational sponsors.

  • In September 2020 California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 3121 into law, creating the nation’s first state level task force to study and recommend reparations for African Americans for the lasting harms of slavery. The Task Force became a catalyst for local government commitments to reparations across the state.

We are part of a movement, a historic opportunity, to repair the generational impacts of systemic racism, close the racial wealth gap, and create healthy living conditions for African American families.

BARHII is supporting the reparations movement nationally and across California through coalition building, policy advocacy, and the creation of a community of practice.

Together, we are mobilizing health and racial equity organizations to implement legislation in California and supporting the groundswell of California reparations practitioners in local government.
