Build for belonging

Build for Belonging is a BARHII initiative and collaborative effort to transform how communities create stable, healthy, and thriving places to live. This work recognizes that throughout American history, communities have built their own belonging through integrated approaches to housing, economic development, cultural preservation, and social connection.

From immigrant communities establishing Chinatowns to the Great Migration and the establishment of Black towns, from Native American communities maintaining sovereignty over their land to mutual aid networks across communities, the American story is fundamentally a story of communities creating the conditions for their own well-being and self-determination.
